Obesity among Americans has been a growing problem in the United States especially over the past decade. Many might argue that Americans are obese due to poor food choices, overeating, genetic predisposition, lack of exercise, or the environment they live in, while others blame it all on fast food chains and restaurants. Over the course of my research I came to find many facts and statistics about fast food consumption causing obesity. Statistics show that without a doubt the United States is the most obese country in the world. Since Americans typically live fast-paced lifestyles, fast food is a quick and easy way to grab a meal on the go. However, eating fast food often provides the body with high amounts of calories, sugar, saturated and trans fats, while lacking vitamins and minerals. Over time, eating fast food can put a strain on your body and increase your risk of developing illness and disease. These diseases include heart disease; type 2 diabetes, stroke and cancer, respiratory problems, arthritis and even reproductive complications. Candelaria states in his article: “Eating a Western diet with many processed or fried foods can increase blood levels of “oxidized” cholesterol and could increase your heart rate risk of attack.” Since fast food contains a surprisingly high amount of sugar , can help cause type 2 diabetes, especially if consumed over a long period of time. Diabetes can contribute to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, and blindness (Candelaria). it can lead to high cholesterol, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, which can lead to a stroke.
