“The Giver,” a novel by Lois Lowry (1993), is a gripping science fiction story that provides the reader with thought-provoking examples of ethical and moral dilemmas. It's a novel aimed at the young teenage reader but it also kept me riveted. Assigning this novel as classwork would provide many opportunities for teachers and students to discuss values and morals. The plot The main protagonist is a young boy named Jonas, who lives in a utopian community that, at first glance, seems like the ideal place to live. In this society each birthday party has its distinct rights of passage and privileges. Each age group has distinct expectations of behavior and responsibility towards the community. Violations of expectations result in extreme shame and may even lead to being “released elsewhere” by the community. Jonas is a well-behaved boy who follows guidelines without thinking about it. We first meet Jonas when he is eleven years old and worried about his impending twelfth birthday. This birthday will determine what his life's work will be within the community. The community is led by a group of elders, and the elders determine what jobs each 12-year-old will have. Children have no words or input into their work, they have to accept whatever is decided for them. In his twelve-year ceremony, Jonas is surprised to learn that he has been chosen to be Receiver of Memories in the formation, a unique and prestigious position. The community he belongs to is a community where everything is based on equality and avoiding painful situations. This avoidance comes at the expense of freedom, individual differences, and extreme environmental controls. There are no colors, climate changes and hills in this world. They could present their project in various formats: PowerPoint, video, written story or poster in both cases, to justify the values they have chosen. “Once a teacher has identified an opening in the curriculum to explore a moral value, the next step is to plan an effective lesson or unit around that value. This means selecting good materials (Lickona, 1991, p. 170).” I think this book is exactly that, a compelling story that can expose students to great moral values. Works Cited Lowry, L. (1993).
