In the escalating action, using the person versus corporation conflict, Kingsolver adds, "the only legal way a person from Guatemala can stay here is if they can prove in court that his life was in danger when they left” (159). This is the dialogue said by Mattie, a minor character in the story who used his shop as a shelter for immigrants can stay, readers realize that the laws are not very fair. It is difficult to prove that someone was in danger as a refugee and probably does not have too many documents or evidence, which limits the chances of immigrants becoming legal. Kingsolver also incorporates the perspective of Taylor, the protagonist, about the situation. "Mattie said that of the approximately thousands of Guatemalans and Salvadorans who had applied for it, only half of one percent of them had gotten it. .." (103-104). The text, as it is worded, makes the US government seem very exclusive. With this in mind, Kingsolver describes with that text how difficult it must be to even live in America due to the fact that governments prefer certain groups of people to migrate there.
