In A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge lives as the unhappy owner of an accounting office who mistreats those around him. Scrooge has not lived life satisfactorily and now resides in seclusion, in no rush to correct the mistakes of his past. Through the intercession of three ghosts, Scrooge travels to Christmases past, present and future and transforms from a greedy man to a man full of care and compassion. At the beginning of the story, Dickens contrasts Scrooge's harsh personality with "Gentlemen of the free and easy lot" (Dickens 31). Scrooge's treatment of others is not easy to overlook, but he must seek forgiveness and free himself. Home Alone remains to this day a Christmas classic in which an eight-year-old boy, Kevin McCallister, stays home for Christmas while his family vacations in France. Kevin is a member of the large McCallister family. As the youngest of several children, he is constantly picked on and not shown much respect. As preparations for the family vacation begin, Kevin is punished and reveals his "desire" to live alone, free from family chaos. His wish comes true when he oversleeps while his family heads to the airport. During the week, Kevin is free to do whatever he wants, but he soon misses his family. Two thieves try to break into McCallister's house and he has to fend for himself (Hughes). Kevin enjoys the newfound freedom that this lifestyle has to offer, but later discovers the absence of love that only his family can offer. The Bible contains teachings that can be applied to any situation in life. The book of Galatians, found in the New Testament, houses just a few of these teachings.
