Being unfaithful to the one she loves is something Desdemona can't get her head around and would never understand. While singing the song "Willow" that her mother's maid sang before her death, a very concerned Desdemona wonders about infidelity by asking, "That there are women who abuse their husbands / So grossly?" (IV, iii. 115). Desdemona grew up in a good family, without ever being exposed to certain realities, which would explain why she always sees the best in people and fails to recognize the real world. The irony arises when Desdemona does not know that at that very moment her dear husband believes that she has been having an affair with Cassio for a long time due to Iago's lies that have leaked out.
