Analysis Essay of the Son of Jesus Eun Ju Oh Drugs are known to be the shortcut to a nefarious and decadent life. Jesus' Son is a collection of stories that contain vivid narratives about the life of an addict. These stories are all told in the first person, which is perhaps a person suffering from poverty and drug addiction. They are seemingly disconnected, but are about the experience of drug addiction, working together on the topic of drug addiction and how it fragments people mentally and physically. “Car Crash While Hitchhiking” and “Work” both convey this theme by using a blunt tone and unique figurative language. However, "Car Crash While Hitchhiking" characterizes the protagonist more directly to reveal the protagonist's downfall to drugs. "Car Crash While Hitchhiking" and "Work" both follow the narrator's stream of consciousness, showing the influence of drugs on people's mindsets. Both stories are confusing with the narrator moving through time and place; it seems like the narrator talks about whatever comes to mind without a specific plot or message. In “Car Crash While Hitchhiking,” the narrator talks about the family who picked him up, and suddenly turns to the story of him and the salesman by saying “…But before all this, that afternoon, the salesman and I…” (4 ) In "Work," the narrator says "And then came one of those moments" (52) when he recalls a memory of his wife while talking about Wayne. Both stories change abruptly without proper conjunction. In everyday life, people think about numerous things. However, what they say is limited, as they speak consistently with a specific purpose, considering factors such as time, place, and appropriateness before speaking. On the other hand... half of the paper......the competitor will end up destroying himself through drugs and alcohol. Also, on page 54, the narrator says "...but you were my mother." just because she poured more drinks than he paid for. The protagonist's mental destruction is so severe that even a little more alcohol can turn a stranger into his mother. “Work” is more implicit in showing the downfall of drug addicts than “Car Accident While Hitchhiking.” The drug leads to the mental and physical collapse of the individual; “Car Crash While Hitchhiking” and “Work” both convey this concept through a sudden, confusing plot that follows the narrator's stream of consciousness and unique figurative language. However, “Car Crash While Hitchhiking” outlines the protagonist's destruction more directly. Jesus' Son gives readers a second-hand experience of being under the influence of drugs through a unique tone and diction that almost perfectly emulates the experience of drug addicts..
