Acid rainA consequence of air pollution is acid rain. Acid rain can also form as snow or sleet that contains relatively higher concentrations of acid-forming chemicals, which come from pollutants from coal smoke and chemical manufacturing. These, combined with water vapor in our atmosphere, cause acid rain. Acid rain is a mixture of wet and dry atmospherically deposited material that contains greater than normal amounts of nitric and sulfuric acids (what is EPA acid rain). When any type of fuel is burned, many different chemicals are released into the atmosphere. The fumes released when a fire burns and those that come out of cars and factories are soot and also contain gases such as sulfur dioxide and nitric oxide. These gases react with water droplets in clouds to produce sulfuric and nitric acids (North Carolina). When acid rain falls, it doesn't kill the trees directly, but over time it damages the leaves, which limits the amount of nutrients available to them. The effects with crops are also similar to those on trees, but most farmers use fertilizers and also add crushed limestone to act as a buffer against acid rain (Forests EPA). This essay discusses two ways in which acid rain can be prevented or controlled. The ways are: catalytic converters and the use of renewable energy sources. The method that seems most effective is the use of renewable energy sources. This method is the most effective because it is beneficial from an environmental and social point of view. The first prevention against acid rain is the use of catalytic converters. One of the main elements that cause acid rain is the emission of nitrogen oxides. Nitrogen oxides are produced by the combustion of fuels which typically... half the paper... if it is damaged it is not easy to repair. The reason is that it may cost more than a new one. For now people should use the cheapest sources available, in the future there may be a chance that better sources will be available and are more beneficial to the environment. The best alternative energy source may be wind energy or hydroelectric energy. Wind energy is really useful because there are many windmills in the countryside. Since there are many of them, the government should be able to place more of them in cities and residential properties. Therefore using low-cost alternative energy sources is much more effective than purchasing catalytic converters which may be cheap but not adequate. It could also damage your car, better to use public transport. This way fewer chemicals would be released into the atmosphere.
