Topic > Movie Rating - 488

Going to the movies is a favorite pastime of American life. Long ago, however, there was no classification system. Making one seemed like a good idea at the time. Today the system is still the same and does not adapt to today's changed times. Therefore, the movie rating system should be revised because the current rating system is outdated. Today's children are growing and maturing faster than ever. Twenty years ago it would have been impossible to show breasts in a PG-13 movie. Today, children are taught the fasts of life younger than one could imagine. This is all due to older siblings, the Internet, and schools that teach kids about sex at the age of twelve. If everything else changes except classification, no one will obey the law. There are a total of four ratings shown in most theaters: G, PG, PG-13, and R. You would think that with so many different types of movies, there would be more ratings. Today's movies have a very complex plot and they don't want to reveal anything about the movie in the commercial. If there were more ratings you will be able to tell what kind of movie it is and what is shown in the movie. For example, the film AI (directed by Stephen Speilberg) would be D_L-SC. This is because the film is a drama, it has sexual language and content. If you saw this in a commercial rather than PG-13, you would have a better idea whether you wanted to see this movie or not. Furthermore, if this type of classification took place, then it could become universal and more socially exclusive than any other. country with its own rating system. Imagine being able to go to other countries (maybe Europe) and watch films made in English there. This could create some sort of bond between the rivaling countries. If the rating system is more universal, DVD players will not need to have region locks. This would allow people to buy a regular DVD player and watch movies from other countries. Additionally, this would save the manufacturer money by not having to invest more money in a region locking chip. This would also help people buying DVD players by making them cheaper. If we could watch films from other countries, it would encourage us to expand our horizon on films from other countries.
