"The Academy Awards' snub of 'Selma' says more about the movie industry than the movie" -- Willie OsterweilWhy prejudice still exists in all aspects of media cinema today? It seems like prejudice has always been tied to Hollywood, but when will it ever end? There are so few successful African-American actors in Hollywood, and the ones who are successful have gone through enormous hardship just to get to where they are now. In the past, African Americans have had the upper hand in terms of cinema. They were forced to come together to create their own kind of cinema where race is not a factor. Minorities continue to face struggles as actors. African Americans are still facing tremendous adversity in the acting world. In Hollywood there is a prejudice against African Americans especially because it is believed that white actors are better than black actors. Black people are believed to have little to no place in the acting world. Due to prejudice, in the early days of acting, African Americans were forced to create their own film and theater productions (Thompson). They had to create their own acting communities just to become respectable actors. “Black-owned theaters, music clubs, and movie theaters began to emerge, and the ubiquity of stereotypical images of African Americans spurred films aimed at countering them” (Thompson). As the influence of black cinema increased, those who opposed its growth sought to stop the theatrical advancement that African Americans were undergoing by making films that countered black cinema culture.
