Topic > Urban Transportation Issues in the United States

Transportation systems are what support the high levels of accumulation and concentration within cities. The larger the city, the more complex its urban problems are if not managed properly. Major transportation problems occur when public transportation systems fail to meet the many demands of urban mobility. Urban efficiency depends heavily on its transportation systems to move consumers, labor, and goods from one point to another. The most important problems of urban transportation in the United States are: traffic congestion, longer commuting, inadequacy of public transportation, difficulties in ecological transportation and good distribution (Rodrigue). Many of these problems occur because of the United States' dependence on the automobile. Statistics show that, when given a choice, people prefer to use a car for its convenience, convenience and speed. Furthermore, there is evidence that many households own more than one automobile (US Department of Commerce, US Census Bureau, American Community Survey). Automobile dependency is caused by underpriced pricing and planning and investment practices by cities (Rodrique). Since the automobile is the most commonly used mode of transportation, cities tend to allocate all transportation money to improving streets and parking areas for automobiles (Radziner). This causes funding for other transportation methods to be sidelined. Furthermore, consumers do not bear the full price of driving cars because most road infrastructure is subsidized. This causes overuse and congestion. Congestion occurs when demand for transportation exceeds supply. Not only does excessive car use affect traffic congestion and circulation, but it also leads to a decrease... by half the map... in Prospect Park and the expansion of the bicycle network. New York City and the MTA have implemented new Bus Rapid Transit routes, with more than twenty new lines to connect underserved communities. This rapid transit system has saved many suburban commuters time and boosted the economies of communities that the subway doesn't reach. Blasio is also planning to work with the Port Authority to build a federally funded Cross Harbor Freight Tunnel, which will ultimately take thousands of trucks off the streets, reducing traffic and increasing economic competitiveness (NYMTC). Overall, both Los Angeles and New York City realize that public transportation is lacking and are working to slowly improve it. Funding appears to be the main issue for both cities, which is why strategic and innovative planning is needed to take any steps towards significant improvement..
