A sixteen-year-old girl with red hair and soft porcelain skin was sitting on a park bench reading an old, well-used book. The girl's name was Meggy and she was reading the Bible. As she read she heard the clicking of bicycle spokes approaching her from the path. The bicycle stopped in front of her and she heard the familiar voice of Harry, a boy in her class, calling out to her, "What are you reading, Carrot?" He told her in a joking tone. “My Bible,” she replied, looking at him, smiling. “Do you really believe in all that stuff about God?” He asked her with a confused expression. She squinted her olive green eyes and replied, “Of course I know!” "Why?" He asked, “How can you prove that what that book says is true?” “Well, in John 17:17b it says 'The word of God is truth' and the Bible is the word of God so it must be true!” She replied confidently. He rolled his eyes and said, “I meant to use anything but the Bible!” "Oh, well, ummm..." Meggy replied, speechless. Many Christians are like Meggy: full of faith in the Bible and God, but I have no way to prove it. And when asked, they immediately turn to the Bible for proof. But for others this is not a very convincing argument for believing in the Bible or in God. Saint Anselm's friends were of the same opinion and asked him to write to prove God and Scripture by reason and without using Scripture as proof. In the preface of his Monologium he proposes, at the request of his friend, to prove God and Scripture without using Scripture to prove it. He says: “It is in accordance with their desire, rather than with my ability, that they have prescribed this form for the writing of this meditation; so that nothing in the Scriptures should be discussed on the authority of sc...... middle of paper ...... will come true to this day. One of these promises is the prophecy that Israel would be scattered among all the nations and persecuted, spoken in Leviticus 26:33-38. Another is that of the prophecy about the Golden Gate of Jerusalem. In Ezekiel 44 the Bible says that the Golden Gate must remain closed, because the Lord has passed through it. Even today that gate is closed and protected by stones. These are just two of hundreds of examples of Bible prophecies proven to have come true. They show that the Bible can be proven and that Christians should use them to prove the Bible in our day. Saint Anselm accepted the great challenge of attempting to prove God through reason, and reason alone. This approach to Christianity is not wrong, as some might say, but rather it is important, even for modern-day Christians. Works Cited The Bible, Sant'Anselm
