Topic > Strategies Used by Interest Groups for Political Purposes…

Scholars have identified two main strategies that interest groups use when making political contributions (McKay 1). Some interest groups such as Citizens United (a conservative non-profit organization dedicated to restoring traditional government to citizens), in order to maintain and see their preferred candidates remain in office, the group spends large sums of money on campaign contributions, rather than on lobbying expenses. Such groups are committed to broad ideological goals such as protecting collective bargaining, reducing taxes, and these groups evidently believe that their goals are best achieved by having like-minded politicians to run and be in power. Second, according to McKay, groups that spend significantly more on lobbying than on campaign contributions can be said to follow an access strategy. The goal of access-oriented groups is to put the policies they like into legislation and keep the unpalatable ones out. In addition to this, groups adopting an access strategy focus their efforts on members of both parties, but especially on the majority party (Rudolph 1999) as opposed to which party has similar ideologies. As groups mature, gain more experience maintaining pressure, established groups have resolved resource issues and slowly occupy political niches. They gain access to the political processes and gradually try to insinuate themselves into the “insider” game. (Beyers et al. 1121). Such people and members seemed only concerned with improving their relative position of certain groups within society. Some groups such as the National Farmers Union (NFU) could be seen as a group with disproportionate influence. There is always a growing public perception that agriculture is the most important center and moves towards finding a solution for various problems, which ultimately benefits the country or communities as a whole. For me I don't see a big problem with weakening democracy, in fact it could be argued that they strengthen the whole democratic society which is constantly changing and challenging one's perspective. Interest groups are the voice in which both the minority and the majority express themselves. It gives a voice to those who are silent or those who generally do not have one, it also encourages democracy to also improve aspects such as equality and freedom. Even though we live in a country, like Canada, where we are all free, some inequalities still exist between males and females. Through the power of interest groups like FAFIA (Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action) issues are unlikely to get richer overnight, but slowly and surely they will..
