Located in Santa Monica, United States, the Gehry Residence is considered one of California's iconic classic deconstructivist architectural works due to its extraordinary form. Designed and renovated directly by the homeowner between 1977 and 1978, Frank Gehry sought to explore his creativity on the use of materials by wrapping the exterior of the home with a new exterior while maintaining the previous existing exterior design on the inside ( 1979,73 ). Consisting of two floors; the floor plans of existing houses were designed in linear form without any particular organization around them. However, Gehry's effort in transforming the exterior managed to change the impression of the house. Gehry's additional exterior design created an unconventional house shape model. The asymmetric shape characterizes the entire external side of the house. According to Goldstein, Gehry tried to tilt the roofline of the house, to create a false perspective and to provoke an absurd perception or expectation in the viewer (1979, 9). The complexity of the form could also produce a relationship with the elements of the house such as the door, the wall and the roof. For example, linearly constructed elements were hardly noticed due to the distraction of the geometric shape around the exterior of the house. It is even difficult to find the entrance to the house due to the salient angles of the exterior. On the other hand, the internal side was also influenced by the complexity of the external side. The internal side of the house has been renovated in line with the other side, showing the combination of the old and new elements. Even though Gehry did not change the basic design of the house, it seems that the external complexity can still be moved from the middle of the paper to the house as a result of the unconventional design. However, from a landscape perspective, this residence is surrounded by trees and creates a complete sense of privacy around the suburban site (Gehry 1979,73). Works Cited1.
