Every Monday I asked some students to help me wash the week's napkins and cloths and this was a great experience for me. I have dealt with very nervous children who just wanted to finish early to go back to playing, and I tried to teach them to calm down and take control of their actions. I also stayed with some students who liked being there and talked to me about their lives. I spend time talking to those students who show interest in what they wanted to tell me because sometimes they just want to be heard and feel that they are relevant to someone. I was able to be the teacher of those kids for a short time each week and this makes me understand that I was able to manage them and teach them many things. Washing isn't just washing, it's waiting your turn to wash, using soapy water first and then clean water, wringing the clothes out tightly so that they don't drip water all around, and finally taking a clothespin and hanging them on the line. A simple activity hides many skills that students need to master in order to perform it correctly. Another way I helped kindergarten students is that when they were done painting I would walk with them outside the classroom to put their paintings in a box. As I walked I asked them what they had painted so they could start thinking about theirs
