Earlier Tea Cake had become jealous of Mrs. Turner's son and had slapped Janie just to relieve the fear inside of him. Also to show Janie, Mrs. Turner and her son who's boss. Tea Cake begins by addressing the men: “Ah, I didn't mean to beat her last night, but old Miss Turner sent for her brother, come and make fun of Janie and take her away from me. Ah, I didn't hit Janie because she didn't do anything. Ah, beat her like dem Turners that's boss” (TEWWG.17.148). Tea Cake wanted to prove to all the men in town that she can control what is hers. Then, suddenly, the next day, the storm hit the Everglades and flooded the entire city. Janie and Tea Cake had to leave their home because if they had stayed they would have drowned. On the way to safety, Tea Cake was bitten by a furious dog who was supposed to bite Janie but didn't because he jumped in front of him. When the storm passed they returned to the Everglades and Tea Cake had rabies. The doctor had ordered not to sleep in the same bed but Tea Cake feels abandoned. Tea says, "How come you'd rather sleep on a pallet than sleep in bed with me?" Janie then saw that he was holding the gun hanging from his side. (TEWWG.19.183). Anger had taken over him and was driving him crazy. Janie was scared and didn't know what to do about Tea Cake's discomfort. He got worse and worse, so much so that he turned into someone who isn't him. The gun that Tea Cake had pointed at Janie: “The gun clicked once…and lodged in the shell as the second click told her that Tea Cake’s ailing brain was driving him to kill….The gun and the rifle rang almost together" (TEWWG.19.183-184. He tried to kill Janie, so she used a rifle to protect herself and shot Tea Cake. She also returned fire but missed. Tea Cake dies and Janie he goes back to his old one
