According to the Oxford Dictionary, a phobia is an extreme or irrational fear of something. Phobias are normally compared to "fears". Fear is usually a normal part of life, as there are many things in life that seem to cause people to feel slightly irritable, such as insects, thieves, or even operations. It is theorized that most people have some level of “sensitive” anxiety when faced with the prospect of medical treatment, especially when it might be “invasive.” Most humans, for example, show a tendency to be squeamish at the sight of blood. Phobias are of course a very common phenomenon. Most, if not all, people have been affected by a phobia at some point in their lives. A phobia is a disorder in which the body reacts in the same way as an individual experiences feelings of fear, however, in this case "fight or flight" on a mental level is normally inappropriate. Most people suffer from fear of medical procedures. There are many different forms of this type of fear. Some of these forms may include fear of surgery, fear of dental work, fear of needles, and even iatrophobia (the fear of doctors). In most cases, these fears are often overlooked; however, it has been studied and proven that if a patient had one of these extreme fears, it could be immensely harmful to their health, especially on a physiological level. However, fear of any medical procedure does not necessarily have to be physically present in or near the doctor's office. There are fears that might also stop you from going to the doctor, such as embarrassment. For example, there are many men who would never see a doctor for the disease that seems to afflict them, such as impotence. Most men take this as a sign that t...... middle of paper ...... which he may have read online. This almost resulted in his death. This phobia turns out to be the worst phobia that doctors face when they try to convince a patient that everything on the Internet is not necessarily true and that patients should turn to them for better advice. An individual severely affected by a phobia would have an increased heart rate, which could lead to a number of other ailments, such as fainting, seizures, nausea, and even sweating. For those who are afraid of any type of medical treatment in an extreme estate, there are specific treatments that could be adopted. Psychological treatments are the treatment of choice, especially when dealing with this type of fear of medical intervention. One of these treatments is, for example, exposure-based treatment: exposing the patient to the feared object without any necessary danger.
