Should America lower the legal drinking age to 18? When it comes to the discussion about lowering the legal drinking age to eighteen, people express different ideas and beliefs regarding the issue. Some believe that the drinking age should be lowered while others believe it should remain the same. Those who believe that lowering the drinking age is the best path to take have valid points. However, there are those who argue that changing the law will not change things for the better. Ultimately, one might think that lowering the drinking age to eighteen might actually show signs of promising equality for all American adults. Changing this law could decrease young adults' tendency to break it and could train them to have more self-control. People who oppose changing this law have several arguments that make them believe that their cause is just. They believe that “lowering the drinking age would give a social stamp of approval to the damage alcohol can cause to brain development” (Pros and Cons of Lowering the Drinking Age). They also argue that “lowering the drinking age will invite greater illicit drug use among youth ages 18 to 21” (Drinking Age ProCon.org). While these are valid points, research shows that lowering the legal age may actually have the opposite effect. In America, when a person turns eighteen, that person is now considered an adult and is treated as such. That person is given responsibilities such as voting, joining the military, opening personal bank accounts, and possibly holding public office. If a person can be given such responsibilities at that particular age, who's to say that he/she isn't...middle of paper...the drinking age of up to eighteen could have a positive effect on the American company when it is finally realized. Lowering the drinking age could lead to a sense of greater equality for all American adults. It could decrease the number of lawbreaking acts by young adults and could also train them to have greater self-control. Changing this law shows much promise for the future and can bring about great change for America. Works cited "Drinking Age ProCon.org." and ProConorg securities.
