This causes Tita to take her anger out on Elena. This is the first time Tita stands up for herself. Later in the story Elena becomes ill and dies. Then her ghost comes back to yell at Tita for getting pregnant with Pedro. With this I ask myself, has Elena ever really loved Tita? This is his daughter and he has never shown compassion for her. Throughout the story he treated Tita more like a slave than his daughter. Also in the story, readers discover that Elena has experienced the same thing that Tita is experiencing. Elena was in love with a man, but her parents forbid the marriage. They then proposed that she marry another man and I was forced to go through with it. Elena continued the relationship with her love and became pregnant. The man Elena loved was killed before she had the chance to escape with him. Leaving her heartbroken with a man she doesn't love. So Elena, of all people, should understand what Tita is going through. Most people assume that Elena would be in favor of Tita marrying Pedro, but for some strange reason she doesn't let that happen. Some may wonder if Elena has the mentality of, "If I couldn't have my love, neither can she." This thought process, however, is extremely childish. Elena can see Tita suffer because of this, but she never changes her ways. Why would anyone want to see their child suffer? Elena must have something good in her; Unfortunately he never seems to show it. Even as a ghost he curses Tita and her son. Now that in death he still can't accept Tita and what she chooses. There doesn't seem to be much love in this family. Even after all these problems and silly family traditions, Rosaura decided not to let Esperanza get married.
