ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATESSummaryThe Organization of American States is the oldest regional organization in the history of the world. On top of that, the OAS is the largest IGO in America. It became more important at the end of the Cold War. Beginning in 1889-1890, these countries organized a meeting known as the International Conference of American States. It was founded on April 30, 1948. The organization was established to ensure regional solidarity and cooperation among its member states. According to the International Conference of American States, 21 countries signed an agreement on April 30, 1948. This then marked the beginning of the Organization of American States (OAS). The OAS began operating in 1951. The OAS Charter establishes the objectives for the modification of the OAS. There are several objectives. The most important are peace and security for these states. The OAS brings together all 35 independent states of the Americans. There were 21 members. In the following years, the newly independent nations of the Caribbean joined the OAS. It has therefore expanded to these countries. The main bodies of the OAS are the General Assembly, the Permanent Council and the Secretariat. Furthermore, there are numerous commissions and committees, some of which are autonomous. All members are represented in the General Assembly and the General Assembly is also the decision-making body. The roles of the OAS with respect to peace, security and the peaceful resolution of disputes. The OAS has played an important role in several regional border disputes and other disputes, such as in the Caribbean and Central America.
