“Music touches us emotionally, where words alone cannot.”(Depp) In the 1920s in America, music did just that. The power of music goes far beyond our imagination. In the 1920s, commonly known as the Jazz Age, music touched a generation and was the driving force of a new social revolution. Jazz music also changed the way music was played and listened to. Jazz is known as a rule-free musical style. This idea of being "free with respect to the rules" was not only applied to music but also to the lifestyle of people, especially young people. Being free from rules appealed to young Americans of the 1920s because many had grown tired of the traditional lifestyle and conventions of previous generations. The Jazz Age was a time when young people liberated themselves and, in doing so, shocked older generations. Jazz music was a phenomenon that, once it came to America, America would never be the same again. The Jazz Age forever changed the lifestyle of young men and women by introducing jazz, which changed the way Americans played and listened to music, and got rid of the old social conventions of previous generations. Jazz is a musical style that has been around for a while. It was first played in New Orleans in the late 19th century, but its influences eventually spread throughout the world. Jazz has its roots in other musical styles such as ragtime, blues, and brass band music, but jazz is truly unique. One of the most important characteristics of jazz is improvisation. Improvisation is the spontaneous creation of new and fresh melodies, usually to a pre-established chord progression. With improvisation the musician has more freedom to express himself as he wishes.
