Topic > The Effects of Performance Appraisals - 2601

CHAPTER 1INTRODUCTIONContext of the StudyIn today's world, where competition is clearly observed, the quality of an individual could be what determines his competitiveness. Performance appraisal can provide essential information on certain points, it is a method of evaluating and communicating with an employee on how he or she is performing the job and forming development plans based on the outcome of the appraisal. An important use of evaluation information is that it could be an input into human resource planning (Byars and Rue, 2008). Performance evaluation must be carried out so that the management can take certain actions through the outcome of the same. It is an organization's job to conduct a performance appraisal to ensure that an employee is working towards achieving the organization's goals. Performance appraisal for a variety of purposes is essential for the organization and its employees. It can have both negative and positive effects. A recent survey conducted at the Conference Board's human resources conference in New York City found that employees believe performance reviews are a negative effect, think more about criticism than positive feedback, especially the need for development (French, 2007). Performance appraisal feedback will highlight facts about its effects on an individual's outcomes and behavior that are likely to lead to development plans and improvement actions. There will be some changes or improvements in the way an individual reacts to performance appraisal and this will determine the perception and recognition of one's work. Evaluation feedback will ultimately share something in someone's behavior, and as we all know, it can give such an influence... middle of the paper... well. One in the authority will define their feedback on you through the evaluation result. More often than not, they leave dissatisfied, feeling that the feedback was inadequate. In order for management to recognize your value and for an individual to make it clear that a promotion is wanted, the appraisal itself should look forward to the information on the appraisal to make a decision on rewarding one with the promotion. According to Zevallos (2013), an international survey conducted by Barbara Annis on 240,000 people, shows that women feel excluded in the workplace and men remain unaware of it. The way men show courtesy towards women will reduce promotion opportunities for women. This implies that the actions of men relative to women will paint a picture from which it can be concluded that men are above women and have greater opportunities.
