CHAPTER ONEIntroductionThe need to establish a zoo in the erstwhile province of East Pakistan was felt right from the birth of Pakistan in 1947 as no such garden existed in this province. This object had been at the center of the Government's attention since 1947. In 1947 the urgent need to establish a state zoo was felt. A zoo has been started at the premises of the Dhaka High Court with a limited number of animal species. The government approved a master plan with the aim of establishing a zoo in Mirpur in 1960. The following year, an advisory committee was constituted for the establishment and proper management of the zoo. After the necessary construction and procurement of domestic and international animals, the zoo was inaugurated on June 23, 1974. Until then it was gradually transformed into a beautiful and attractive zoo exhibiting animals in natural environments using modern methods of husbandry. Main Objectives of Dhaka The zoo engages in wildlife conservation through collection and breeding of rare and endangered species of wild animals, research, education and recreational activities. The zoo is also involved in wildlife conservation, education, wildlife research, and promoting public awareness of these species. Around 3.9 million visitors visit the Dhaka Zoo every year. It is a center for healthy recreation for people of all ages. The zoo's peaceful environment attracts people seeking relief from the hustle and bustle of urban life. It is the national zoo under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. The area of ​​this zoo is approximately 75 hectares. It has two lakes of approximately 13 hectares, which welcome thousands of migratory birds every year in the winter season.
