Currently, social media is the most popular method of communicating and interacting with others. It is a methodology for new media as it changes and evolves with our needs and expectations. Social media has evolved and adapted to become an important part of our personal and professional lives. By today's standards in Canada, almost everyone has some form of social media, whether it's standard or popular email, Facebook, YouTube or Twitter. The social media phenomenon began in the 1970s with the first email. Email allowed people to send detailed messages back and forth, rather than using traditional snail mail. People were able to share their personal experiences with friends and family around the world with the click of a button. Facebook is an online social networking site that "gives people the power to share and make the world more open and connected." “(Facebook) Facebook isn't just for connecting with old friends and meeting new people, the social platform has been able to reconnect lost family members. Social media has created incredible and heartwarming stories about discovering missing family members, like the story of Anais Bordier and Samantha Futerman; Bordier discovered Futerman while watching videos on YouTube and after discovering that the American actress looked exactly like her, Bordier managed to contact Samantha Futerman via Facebook. The two women found undeniable similarities such as their birthday, nationality and adoption story. They began raising money, through the power of social media, to help fund their "documentary about their newfound relationship and plan to film their first meeting and DNA testing." ".
