As he changes, Auden gains the knowledge to get back up and try again, when he fails. Likewise, he also learns that life can give you more than one chance, and that sometimes it takes more than the first chance to get it right. Many things happen in life and sometimes we are not given more than one chance. And when we get a second chance, sometimes we get it right, but sometimes we fail that chance too. Before going to the restaurant for the family meal, when Heidi's father and Auden were arguing, Auden's father had a second chance in a situation that closely resembled an altercation that Auden remembers with his father and mother. Auden also realizes that his father has a second chance to not leave his new family on page 302 after she visits him in his new mansion. On page 368 he calls his father to address this second possibility. "'It's just,' I said, 'that you have an opportunity here to have a second chance.' “A second chance,” he repeated. “Yes,” I said.” Then he continues: “'But you won't even accept it. You'd rather just quit.'” Auden then comes up with the fact that she was giving up too. At the end of page 369 we read: “Sometimes, you get things right the first time. Others, the second. But the third time, they say, is the charm. Standing there, giving up too, I thought I would never know if I didn't get back on that bike, one last time.
