Topic > South Korean Education and American Education

Education has solved many social problems and has also contributed to the development of societies. From this we can say that education reflects society and is one of the issues of concern in many countries. In South Korea all students take education very seriously and the schools are also very strict; While the American education system offers students a lot of freedom. It is no wonder that there is no country that shares its education system with other countries because they have their own culture and customs. These days many students from foreign countries come to the United States as exchange students to share their culture and study. I am also from South Korea as an international student in an American college. I found that the American and South Korean education systems have many differences. However, since I have been studying in America for a couple of years, I think that if the American education system would adapt some aspects of the South Korean education system, American students could benefit greatly. From this experience I found that the main difference between Korean education and American education; school education system, parents' passion for their children's education and students' daily schedule. First, South Korean schools are very strict; otherwise the main point of the American school system is freedom. For example, Korean schools are taking control of students' freedom, which means that schools set students' daily schedules. Most classes include science and liberal arts, but are limited to sports or other activities such as art, music, and so on. Furthermore, teachers are so strict that they can force students to go to school...halfway... American education requires that in the Korean education system, students learn by rote. However, the American education system is a creative education. South Korea has no underground resources, so it has to compete with other countries with knowledge. This is one of the reasons why South Koreans have so much passion for education. The most important thing Americans should learn from South Korean students is their great passion for education. Although the two countries differ in many educational systems or values, both place great emphasis on education for the student's future. Therefore, if we consider the strengths of each country's education, this would be close to the best education. And as I said before, if the American education system adapted some aspects of the South Korean education system, American students could benefit greatly.
