Topic > An Alternative to Expensive Colleges and Universities

Over the past few decades, the costs of college education have increased at a faster rate than the costs of health care. These rising costs have negatively impacted our national debt, and student loan debt currently stands at more than $1 trillion. The solution to this growing problem is to make all public higher education free. Students' goals to develop their minds and learn for the sake of education are undermined by high tuition costs. It is important for our nation to be educated, and it is not difficult to find a compromise to allow as many students as possible to achieve their higher education goals. In Robert Samuels' article, “For Public Universities, the Best Tuition Is No Tuition,” his main goal is clearly stated; public college tuition should be free. In this piece, Samuels offers many workable solutions to this problem currently pending. Samuels says the cost of making all public colleges free would be about $97 billion and $33 billion for community colleges, based on what the federal and state governments already spend on Pell Grants and financial aid. By using current resources more effectively, Samuels explains his ultimate goal. He demonstrates his point that by making public education free, our tax systems, tax revenues, and national debt will decrease by 1947. then President Harry Truman recommended that education should be free and universal at all levels of education. education, as a way to extend affordability to higher education. The commission's report stated: “It is obvious that free and universal access to education, in terms of student interests, abilities, and needs, must be one of the principal goals of American education. It's time to put education on paper. The movement will only happen if students, parents and all sensible Americans unite to demand it now.
