Thomas Jefferson quoted, “The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only legitimate object of good government.” This quote emphasizes the points about how a person's happiness resulting from the decisions they make creates a stronger government and that “care for human life and happiness” is the only accepted object of good government. Doctor assisted suicide should be a right given to a terminally ill patient because a person should have the freedom to end their life if they are mentally capable, it would relieve the pain and anguish of family and friends as well as the patient, and medical funds will be available to help other people. Euthanasia: The act or practice of killing or allowing the death of seriously ill or injured individuals in order to relieve pain and suffering. This is also known as a “good and painless death”. There are many types of euthanasia that people support. These include: passive, active, physician-assisted, and involuntary suicide. Passive euthanasia is the hastening of a person's death by depriving them of life support and letting nature take its course (“Easing Death” 18). For example, doctors discontinuing medical treatments, procedures, and medications is an example of passive euthanasia. Active euthanasia is the process in which the death of a person is caused with a lethal injection or the suspicion of extraordinary medical treatment at the person's request (“The Miscellaneous” 5).
