In many high schools across the country, student athletes use drugs. “The percentage of students who drank alcohol was 72.5%, while the number of students who used marijuana was 36.8%” (Report: Nearly Half of High School Students Use Drugs and Alcohol ). Students believe that because they are athletes, they do not need to abide by the rules because they feel more superior and that the narcotic will not hurt or affect them. Implementing random drug testing for athletes will create a positive image and will not harm others or oneself. Schools need to have drug testing for student athletes because drugs affect relationships, drug use has consequences, and ultimately, they have a major effect on the body. Not drug testing student athletes will affect the relationships the student athlete has with others. The team the athlete is on will be one of the largest relationship groups that will be affected. Being on a team is like a family and a family requires teamwork. Family and teamwork require all members to work together and get along. Younger athletes on the team look up to older team members or captains. “Many of these younger students revere the senior football player or want to be like that sophomore star on the football field,” (More Schools Should Drug-test Athletes). If these athletes set an example by using drugs and playing sports, then younger players will most likely follow in the footsteps of their role models. Likewise, taking drugs is prohibited during the season, so if someone on the team uses drugs they probably won't notify the coach or other team members. This will lead to lying to others. and then hurting the team. Arguments and mistrust between team members... the focus of the card... drugs will have a huge impact on them and the people around them. When a person uses drugs once, they will continue to use them and eventually become addicted. Drug testing of student athletes is a necessity because taking drugs affects the relationships the athlete has, drugs cause consequences that can be harmful, and lastly, taking drugs damages the body causing health problems for the athlete. athlete. Therefore, drug testing should be carried out in all high schools in the country. Works Cited "Drugs and Sports". - Information and support on drugs and alcohol in Ireland.
