Abraham Lincoln once said, “People are usually as happy as they think they are.” Therefore, implying happiness can be determined by one's mindset. However, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World creates a vision of a utopian society that achieves happiness by altering the mentality of its population to make them believe they are happy. In a society that describes such a strange ideology of the future, people are no longer as happy as they think they are, but as happy as the government allows them to be. Canadians are repugnant to Huxley's world despite the many similar issues between Canada and the New World State. The excessive use of chemicals, the obsession with consumerism and the illusion of happiness demonstrate that Canadian society is becoming more and more like the Brave New World. Chemicals are overly used to achieve youth and happiness in both the Brave New World and Canadian society. The first example is the use of drugs to achieve a euphoric feeling and to escape something instead of facing it in both societies. In Brave New World, Soma, a hallucinogenic drug, is a pertinent part of life that is a necessity to keep the world in order. When a member of society is unhappy, it is a natural instinct to consume soma. When Lenina is angry and John doesn't join her after their date, Lenina thinks, “One gram, she decided, wouldn't be enough; his had been an affliction greater than an ounce” (Huxley 171). Lenina uses soma to prevent unacceptable unhappiness in the Brave New World, just as many Canadians use antidepressants as a simple solution to their unhappiness. The use and prescribing of pharmacotherapy for depression increased from 3.2 to 14.5 million between 1981 and 2000 in Canada (Journal of the University of Toronto). ...... half of the document ...... ciate Deputy Minister, Office for Consumer Affairs.
