Michael Pollan has developed his own algorithm for proper nutrition. His algorithm is “Eat food, not too much, especially plants.” His explanation of eating food is to consume real food and avoid fake processed foods. Its meaning of not too much is to be aware of how we eat our food and have portion control. Ultimately, Pollan's explanation for most plants is to choose the best types of foods, rather than focusing on nutritional value. Unlike Pollan, Mary Maxfield's theory on how to eat healthy is “Trust yourself. Trust your body. Meet your needs." You can eat whatever you want or need and you have to trust that your body will tell you what it needs. A flaw with both Pollan and Maxfield is the fact that they both want to ignore the fact that the our body needs nourishment. Pollan argues that in his formula composed mainly of plants we should focus on the best type of foods and not on the nutritional value of foods. However, numerous studies state that getting proper nutrition is a crucial part of overall health, for example, lack of calcium can cause weakening of bones, resulting in increased bone risk
