The beginning of Walt Disney's lifeWalt was born in Chicago and moved to Missouri with his family in 1960 to a farm. He started drawing farm animals here. When he was 18 he got his first job as a cartoonist. Walt began drawing non-motion cartoons for companies at the Pesman-Rubin Commercial Art Studio. There, Walt met Ubbe (later shortened to Ub) Iwerks. Uub taught Walt how to make the drawings more professional. They had only been hired at Pesman-Rubin because of the Christmas rush, so soon after; they were both let go. Then, one day, Walt suggested that they, Walt and Uub, should create their own art studio. Uub agreed because he needed money to help his family. They called their company Iwerks-Disney. Their first office belonged to their first client who exchanged rent for artwork. Their business went very well. They did so well; they could afford a larger office. Walt saw an ad for a cartoonist for the Kansas City Motion Picture Advertising Company in the newspaper in the spring of 1920. This company produced short cartoons for local businesses. They both loved cartoons and became interested in filmed cartoons that appeared in theaters. So the opening of the Kansas City Film Ad Company seemed like the perfect opportunity to learn about cartoons. Walt would apply for the job and attempt to convince the company that they needed two cartoonists for the job, in hopes that Uub would get a job as well. Unfortunately the job was only offered to Walt. The job offered $40 a week, more money per week than Walt and Ub had dreamed of. Uub told Walt to take the job and that he would continue on his own with Iwerks-Disney. After working for a while at the Kansas City Ad Company, Walt and his employers found him falling behind, Walt found he needed help so he asked Ub Iwerks. This time Walt's persuasion worked and Uub was hired. The Iwerks-Disney business was no longer needed. During all this time, Walt was living with his brother, Roy, and Roy's girlfriend. However, doctors found Roy's health was deteriorating and he was assigned to a veterans hospital in New Mexico because he was a World War II veteran. 1.
