The impacts of coal mining are visible from landscapes that lack the beauty of a mountainous backdrop and from landscapes devoid of trees or plants. These areas are made barren by excavating the earth to reveal the coal hidden beneath (Theilmann, 2015). In conjunction with the impact on the environment, various health problems have emerged, along with growing safety concerns. Black lung, a respiratory disease, and mining accidents are responsible for injuring or even killing thousands of miners every year. These deaths are the result of suffocation caused by poisonous gases present in the mines and explosions that lead to the collapse of the mine roofs. The mortality rate of workers in the coal mining industry is among the highest in the mining industry (Joyce, 1998). As evident, the destruction left by coal mining is harmful to the environment and has a huge impact on the well-being of miners employed in coal mining.
