Topic > and embracing the past can lead to the discovery of a brighter future. Occasionally, when someone is going through a difficult time, they will likely feel that the universe is not in their favor and a sense of hopelessness may set in. Victor was having a difficult time financially. Before receiving the news of his father's death, he had lost his job at the Bureau of Indian Affairs (274). With no one else to turn to for help, Victor contacted the tribal council for assistance. The tribal council itself "was going through a difficult time financially" and could only assist him with a hundred dollars, which was nowhere near enough to fund his trip to Phoenix (275). With only one hundred dollars, Victor's situation was becoming more and more difficult to manage. Victor's problem... half of the paper... they grew up, they even moved away. To avoid receiving too much pain from his friends, Victor abandoned his friendship with Thomas who was different from other children. Through the connection with his former best friend, Victor was able to travel to Phoenix to reclaim his father's ashes and belongings. During the journey we see Thomas and Victor remember their days spent as friends, and although they both ultimately agreed that they couldn't be friends, they gained a deeper understanding of each other. Even though Victor couldn't say it, deep down, he knew that his best friend was actually Thomas.
