Thesis Statement: This paper intends to argue that morality should not be the basis for making laws in the Philippines because it is a bias on religion, is against individual choices, and leads to discriminationINTRO(1.1) The dependence of laws on religion could be traced back to the ancient period. The mentality of the ancient Romans in particular is more or less the same mentality of modern Filipinos. They follow the mindset set by their religion because of the fear of the consequences of the afterlife (Edwords, 1985). So, not much has changed in the way laws are created. Some domestic bills progress slowly due to the sectarian mentality influencing the laws. For example, it took ten years for the RH bill to be passed due to the endless arguments that religious groups expressed (RHbill ORG, n.d.). Laws should adapt to the changing modern era; he should not base his heart on religion, but rather on true equality.(1.2) There are bills such as the divorce bill that have not been passed due to issues of morality. One reason is that most people look at the ethics of a person's actions rather than their reasons. People may judge the couple's virtues and morality before knowing the reason for their separation. Another is that an authority such as the Catholic Church that dominates a large percentage of the Philippines will not uphold the divorce law because it is against their teachings. It would be wrong for them, as well as for the Catholic religion, to separate a couple who made vows and were united in church during marriage. This is perhaps why the Bible is used as the basis for said morality, since the Bible provides... middle of paper... believes in free will. How can an individual do what he wants freely if judgment and punishment await him when the act to be performed is bad? Clearly, free will is not evident in those situations. Apart from these, people have different perspectives. Ethical relativism states that people from different cultures follow different standards of right and wrong; that each differs from following a specific branch of ethics. A person's action depends on the society he is in; varies from one culture to another (Timbreza, 2008 in Velasco, 2013). Therefore, morality as the foundation of laws does not equal equality because it is a prejudice. Similar to what was explained in 4.0, same-sex marriage inequality is the consequence of an individual's need to follow social norms about religion that lead to discrimination.
