The initiative I have chosen to talk about is the three strikes law, sanctions for repeat offenders, Proposition 36. This proposal was introduced in the vote of the 6th November 2012 as state stature initiated, where it was approved with a share of 69.30% in the state of CA. This proposal was created to modify elements of California's "Three Strikes" law, which was approved by the state's voters in 1994 through Proposition 184. There are 24 other states that have some form of Three Strikes type law in in force today. In 2004, Proposition 66 was a reform of the Three Strike law, just as Proposition 36 was established and put on the ballot for voters, where voters rejected Proposition 66. Proposition 36 would reduce sentences for any third strike offender if the crime is neither serious nor violent. Depending on the type of your third strike depended on the length of your sentence. A third party convicted of a serious or violent crime would still receive a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 25 years. (cit kcet). If the third offense was a drug, sex or weapons crime, they would also receive a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 25 years. If the third offense is a non-serious or non-violent crime, people will receive double the normal sentence. Also, a person with a single conviction for rape, murder, child molestation and other heinous crimes will get the harshest punishment even if the third strike is minor. This proposal would also allow third party “strikers” who are already facing life imprisonment to request a sentence reduction using the new proposal. From an economic standpoint, if passed, it would save the state money but increase expenses.... .. half of the document ...... sanctions - California State Government."
