The Maya were a powerful civilization in the past, but they collapsed and abandoned their cities. Theories have been formulated to try to understand what happened to the Mayans, and one theory may simply predict what will happen to our societies if the earth's temperature continues to rise. The Mayan Collapse Drought Theory theorizes that a severe drought hit the Yucatan Peninsula. Thin tropical soils lacked fertility to grow crops that caused famine, disease, and warfare in the Maya's basic drought cycle. This theory can be explained by both environmental and cultural factors of Mayan society. As scientists explore the global climate change that is happening now, more evidence is being explored in climatic, historical, hydrological, tree ring, volcanic and geological factors. The lack of food and water could have caused extreme theft in their society, causing riots and making them vulnerable to staging invasions. Throughout history, droughts have caused the fall and collapse of numerous powerful civilizations. Climate change is causing droughts around the world, and like the Mayan drought theory, it's all happening quickly. Humans must learn to live in a hotter world that will bring severe droughts and change the entire earth. Solutions to global climate change continue to be tested, and most of them have to do with carbon
