If literary works were to be divided into two categories based on the length of the work, I would propose that these categories could be works that take the average reader less than half a an hour to read, called short-form literature, and more than half an hour to read, called full-length literature. If this statement were accepted, then I would believe that short stories, short dramatic pieces, and poems would fall into the category of short-form literature, while the category of full-length literature includes longer dramatic pieces, novels, and short stories. Poetry is the only genre among these that, because so much of it is left to interpretation, character development is difficult to define. The rest of these works, both short and full-length, contain clearer examples of character development. Full-length works are capable of more than one character who challenges stereotypes, thus more effective for the reader, while literature of shorter duration is typically capable of one, if any, character who challenges these roles. Since feature films are capable of this, these are the pieces that leave a full impact on readers; these are the characters that people remember. Whether or not there is a traditional protagonist, overt and obvious to the audience, is an important factor in determining whether that character will have extensive development. In AR Gurney's “Sylvia,” there is a clear “main” character, Greg, around whom the conflict, both emotional and physical, centers. “Sylvia” is about a man who takes in a dog, played by a human, and the conflict this brings between him and his wife. In this particular play, some characters come out at the end of the show and state how they have changed. Gurney writes:Greg (aud......halfway through the paper......there is hope of not following a stereotype. The rhythm shows this effectively because in the points of the novel where they are present, the story picks up ; the plot is imbued with energy when people break the status quo. This is what pushes the reader to drag Jackson's tale a little more through a large amount of detail a little dialogue. Dialogue does not necessarily drive the story, but rather simply adds to it. Considering the pace and the presence of a specific antagonist, feature films will literally conquer short-form works more often in tests of their effectiveness on readers. Dividing works into two categories based on length makes it easier analyze how they will affect the reader. Audiences will retain literature longer when it has longer, more developed content.
