Topic > Cultural differences between West and East - 710

Every person on Earth has their own mind, their own set of values and their own moral code. It is therefore not surprising that two individuals can have different opinions on certain topics. Now, if we consider the distances that divide some cultures, it is more than evident that the set of beliefs will be very different. This essay aims to compare the Western world, represented here by Europe and the United States, and the Eastern world, represented by East and South-East Asia. While most of East Asia is strongly traditionalist due to the influence of Confucianism and Taoism, the West is more liberal and atheistic. Because of this, these two cultures separate when it comes to family traditions, family ties, general respect towards elders, and even the value of education. As mentioned above, tradition has a very strong and unshakable place in Asian family, while in Western families, traditions are followed only during certain holidays, for example, Christmas and Easter. One of the needs a family must have is a descendant capable of carrying the surname, so parents in Asia desire a male child as their eldest child. The ever-present conservatism can also be felt in marriages, where parents play a very active role, unlike the Western family. When it comes to the issue of bonds between family members, these two cultures could be considered polar. Asians tend to form stronger bonds with family members, even indirect relatives. For example, relatives live in close proximity, and only in rare cases do children live in different cities or countries, usually only due to employment, and visits are scheduled weekly. While in Western families there is nothing unusual about family members living in different places… in the center of the map… and their hierarchy (Hatch 364). Therefore comparing the traditions, family ties, respect for elders and academic motivation of these two cultures is more than complicated and one should study them more in depth to understand their traditions, beliefs and behaviors. But due to globalization, many of these differences are slowly disappearing, but there is still a very strong presence of culture in the first wave of immigrants, which can cause hardship among "West Asian families", because the children of immigrants , who were born in a foreign Western country, have no contact with the culture, so it is very difficult for them to adapt to two different cultures, the one their parents come from and the one they live in. But those who manage to adapt to both cultures, and are able to balance each other perfectly, gain a very significant advantage.
