Those who adapt to their surroundings have a sense of self-acceptance about where they came from and where they are now. However, this is not always the case for the characters we read about in the four autobiographies. As the different individuals remembered their past, we were able to identify key elements of the story that showed us how these different individuals were able to adapt to survive in their environments. In these autobiographies, we got a glimpse into the different childhood lives these authors lived. In “The Struggle to be an All-American Girl” by Elizabeth Wong, she talks about how she never truly accepted her Chinese culture and how she tried to adapt more to her Americanized society. She even felt that her language was the reason she was embarrassed because it didn't seem as pleasant as French or as polite as the American South. When people spoke Chinese, to her it was obscene and obscene. She then managed to survive in her environment by having a "cultural divorce" but in the end, when she was no longer one of them, she ended...
