Gangs of New YorkThe film Gangs of New York is set in the Five Points neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. It begins in 1846. The main protagonist Amsterdam Fallon, son of the priest Fallon, watches his father, the leader of the Dead Rabbit gang, prepare and die in battle. While his father is at the last moment of his life and gives advice to his son, Billy "the Butcher" Cutting breaks the head of the priest Fallon. Amsterdam flees from Cuttings' henchmen to hide his father's knife before being captured by the native gang. He is taken to Hellgate Orphanage. In 1862 Amsterdam returns to the Five Points neighborhood and reunites with his old friend Johnny Sirocco. Johnny now works for Billy "the Butcher" and introduces Amsterdam to the Cutting. Amsterdam finds its way into the inner circle of Cutting natives. Amsterdam also meets Jenny Everdeane while dating Johnny. He runs into Johnny to pickpocket his watch. Amsterdam notices and lets Johnny know. Johnny states that he always lets her take things. Since both Cutting and Jenny love Amsterdam, Johnny becomes jealous. He notices that young Vallon is quickly making his way into the upper ranks of the Cutting gang and into Jenny's heart. Out of jealousy, Johnny reveals Amsterdam's true identity to Cutting. Cutting decides to make Vallon angry. He achieves this by playing a dangerous game involving knives with Jenny during the annual celebration of the death of the priest Vallon. Amsterdam then attempts to assassinate Cutting but fails and Cutting teaches him a lesson. Amsterdam lives thanks to Jenny's help. To avenge his father, he revives the outlaw Dead Rabbit gang. He poses a challenge to Cutting after his friend "Monk" McGinn is killed by Cutting. The fight takes place in the Five Points neighborhood on the day that... at the heart of the document... aspects of that time period were described faithfully to its historical period.
