The thought of community service was boring to me before I started my volunteer work. I was afraid of starting community service even though I knew I had to. Where I earned my hours didn't even matter to me. I just wanted to get it over with. To my surprise it wasn't what I expected. Community service was not a painful experience; it was a very pleasant and beneficial experience. I did my community service with Habitat for Humanity. The nonprofit chooses the applicant who buys the home, and Habitat only charges him for the cost of the materials. Almost all of the workers are volunteers, so Habitat for Humanity does not have to pay a high amount of wages. I felt good about myself being one of those volunteers.
