Topic > Examples of inhumanity in hedge killing

The main victims of this inhumanity are black people, who are considered the least of the least. This is seen when, even though Calpurnia is a great housekeeper and has done nothing wrong, Aunt Alexandra still insists that Atticus fire her, just because she is black. This brings to light the deep-seated racism in Maycomb. There are many other characters who are hateful and act brutally towards others, such as Mrs. Dubose when she shouts horrible things about Atticus to Scout and Jem "Your father is no better than the niggers and trash he works for!" This shows that she is not afraid to express her opinion on the hatred she feels towards people and that she certainly does not care how her words may hurt others. However, the most "evil" character in To Kill a Mockingbird is Mr. Ewell who behaves absolutely disgracefully to almost everyone he meets. First, he harms his daughter both physically and emotionally, traumatizing her to the point that she no longer feels loved. The fact that she can be so evil with her own blood just shows how bad of a person she is. Furthermore, he goes to the absolute extreme to show his hatred towards Atticus, verbally insulting him and then spitting in his face as a sign of ignorance. To add insult to injury, he tries to kill Scout and Jem and almost succeeds. The fact that Bob Ewell is willing to kill two innocent children who did absolutely nothing to hurt him just shows how cold he truly is and the degree of ruthlessness that people are willing to resort to just to hurt.
