While the country as a whole struggled with many civil rights issues affecting African Americans, each state had citizens who were going through their own struggles that led to the protests. At the University of Wyoming, 14 African-American football players, later known as the Black 14, wanted to protest their football game against Brigham Young University, due to the university's association with the Church of Jesus Christ of Saints of the Latter Days (LDS Church) . The Mormon Church had rules that prohibited African-American citizens from serving in the priesthood. The Black 14 along with the Black Student Alliance at the University of Wyoming believed that with all the changes the country was going through, the Mormon church would also need to make changes to be more accepting of African Americans. The Black 14 wanted to wear black armbands as they competed with Brigham Young University next weekend. They decided to speak to their coach Lloyd Eaton before carrying out their protest. They had worn black armbands to their meeting with Coach Eaton and as soon as he saw the armbands he fired them from the team. Although the Black 14 never got to protest the game because they were kicked off the team, this group of youth received attention both locally and nationally. The national effects of the Black 14 had primarily to do with the racist practices of Brigham Young University and the Mormon churches; while the local debate focused on the constitutionality of the dismissal of the 14 African-American football players. This case demonstrates that collective action can have many notable results, even if the original protest doesn't go as planned.
