Grappling as a sport and defense method has its roots as early as 3400 BC with the Egyptians. Recorded images of ancient fights can be found on the tombs of Beni-Hasan and the Vizier Ptahhotpe. Eventually different forms and styles of fighting began to emerge around the world. The ancient Greek Olympic Games featured Greco-Roman wrestling matches and the Indians developed their own form of wrestling called Pahalwani around 11 AD. Grappling began as an art of self-defense, evolved into the art of the battlefield and finally into sport. Many different types of wrestling have grown independently around the world and over time these different arts have come into contact and mixed. There are only a finite number of ways to manipulate the meaning of the human body at a certain point, all fighting styles are related to each other.
