John Cheever uniquely crafted the story "The Swimmer" by using a mix of surrealism and realism throughout the story. Most people when they read “The Swimmer” have to reevaluate it to understand what is going on. The reason for this is that Cheever oscillates so much between surrealism and realism that the reader doesn't even notice. The story begins with Neddy who is strong and young, but as the story progresses he becomes weaker and older. When he was young Neddy decided to swim in all the pools in his neighborhood. As he gets older and weaker, it becomes more difficult to swim in pools, and the seasons pass without him even realizing it. Surrealism and realism are completely opposite. Surrealism means “beyond reality”. It is when someone creates art or literature using images that represent unconscious thoughts and fantasies. It basically means that there are realistic features in an unrealistic environment. Surrealism is usually depicted through art.
