Topic > Household Cleaning Products as Teratogens - 2079

Young mother Molly Jones Gray has always wanted to hold soft, delicate babies in her hands, but she never expected to have problems trying to get pregnant. She had many miscarriages and learned that because of the household products she could not get pregnant. She became part of a study to find out if there were chemicals in her body that she wasn't aware of. According to the study, Molly had higher levels of mercury, unlike the other women involved in the study. She also learned that the household cleaners she used at the time not only affected her, but also the fetus inside her. Today, health experts are trying to examine the health risks from (toxic) cosmetics, cleaning products and cans. While women are pregnant, do they feel they might be at risk when using cleaning products at home? When do women ever consider household cleaning products to be teratogenic? Do they ever stop to think that touching and smelling a common cleaning product could affect the fetus? Why are women so naive about the harmful chemicals in these cleaning products? Teratogens are substances that can damage the fetus during its developmental stages (Crandell 94). Today the most common teratogens are known as smoking, alcohol, marijuana, caffeine, cocaine and also other types (Crandell 96). Every year 1.6 million people die from indoor air pollution, according to the World Health Organization (The Deirdre). Women have always been stereotyped as stay-at-home mothers with responsibility for the home and child support. Mothers currently work outside the home, but still have the responsibility of taking care of the home. “A study of 20 industrialized countries…… half of paper…… 94, 96-97,191.
