It is hypothesized that through laboratory studies it will be demonstrable that the expansion of microplastics has worsened over the years and is having a strong impact on marine life. The results of this study support the research hypothesis because it states: “Since the middle of the last century, several million tons of plastic have been produced (more than two hundred million tons per year)” (Ivar do Sul, Costa, 2013) . This makes sense when considering pollution because: “Microplastics are reportedly present on six continents, and larger quantities are commonly related to densely populated areas. In a study on the types (mainly fibres) and materials (often polyester and acrylic) of microplastics, it was suggested that the plastic was produced from sewage effluents, including wastewater from washing machines” (Ivar do Sul, Costa, 2013). These findings indicate that pollution is present on six of the seven continents and comes from highly populated areas. These results agree with the hypothesis that our “pristine and superproductive world” is influencing marine life ecosystems (Vannela, 2012). All these results combined confirm the general hypothesis that pollution is getting worse in the ocean and more and more marine life ecosystems are affected, but there is
