On March 25, 1931, nine men boarded a freight train. They did not know the events that would follow. Unjust and racist, the Scottsboro trials were not just ordinary cases. The Scottsboro Trials changed the way America viewed segregation. The nine young people who boarded that train that day were innocent and harmless. The Scottsboro trials revealed the unfair treatment of African Americans and changed views on segregation. In the 1930s, segregation was forcefully enforced and whites were superior to blacks. So when white girls accuse black men of raping them, the white girls are usually believed. The Scottsboro trials were supposed to last only a few days, then they turned into months, and soon became years. The Scottsboro trials were conducted in a way that gave us long-term effects. In the 1930s hobos hitched rides on freight trains and did whatever they wanted (Carter 3).
