"'A person is either with this court or must be counted against it, there is no path in between.'" Act 3, scene 1 pg. 87. The characters in the play are portrayed as good or bad with no middle ground, which makes their lives even more difficult. Salem falsely labeled the people in town as good or bad, but they had very little to no evidence to support this. Salem labels Nurse Rebecca a witch and evil, when in reality she was innocent and cared for everyone's children. Abigail was an evil, lying, vindictive and careless character, the people of Salem considered her a good character. In the play Rebecca Nurse was a babysitter to Mrs. Putnam's children, when the children died of illness or other reasons that they could not In order to not be cared for, the blame was placed on Rebecca Nurse. Rebecca Nurse has delivered many babies without problems. When Ann Putnam gave birth to her children, many died, which caused Rebecca Nurse to become envious and had her arrested. Parris (trembling) Rebecca, Rebecca, go to her, we are lost. Suddenly she cannot bear to hear the word of the Lord. " (Pg 31). At the beginning of the first act Betty was in bed, presumably ill, she cannot get up, and her father Parris begins to lose hope. In the play Rebecca The nurse is portrayed as a strong figure, she tries her best to help the sick with great intentions. Usually she was the one who went to help. Proctor: (I say this solemnly) Rebecca: (I don't like the smell of this "authority." ") Rebecca: No, you cannot break charity with your minister. You are another kind John shook his hand, make peace (31)". Proctor, Rebecca Nurse and Parris are arguing, Parris tries to warn Proctor that there is a battle going on between the... middle of paper...... or probably they had none at all, but this caused a lot of chaos and executions. Rebecca Nurse was one of the characters who was declared evil, when in reality she was essentially innocent and had nothing to do with the murder of the children she cared for. Abigail was also mislabeled as a good character when in reality she was a big liar and oblivious to everything that happened in the story. Lastly, Marry Warren was a good character, she liked a little power here and there, but she did what was right, but that obviously got her nowhere. So, to save her from execution, he began to lie. In comedy being the opposite of good was the way to go, being innocent and remaining drama free would get you nowhere short of executed. Everything was backwards, the concept was not right and there was no evidence to prove the witchcraft trials .
