The book HIDEOUT, written by Gordon Korman, begins with an adventurous group of middle school kids who come to the rescue of one of their friends to hide a ferocious Doberman in front of a corrupt businessman can harm him. The story begins in early August, in Cedarville, New York, with classmates leaving for summer camp but little knowing they would be sneaking a dog with them. There are two main characters in each of the summer camps and the story takes place in all three of these camps. These summer camps take place in the woods of New York's Catskill Mountains. They are Camp Ebony Lake, Camp Ta-da and Camp Endless Pines. These three camps may be in the same woods but they are spread out and miles apart. There is a different theme for each camp and this makes the book more interesting because the setting is constantly changing. The main characters in this story are 6 friends from Cedarville Middle School, a crooked businessman and a Doberman Pincher. Griffin Bing is "The Man with the Plan" and organizes the missions in which this group of friends is involved. Ben Slovak is Griffin's best friend and has a ferret that accompanies him everywhere to help him with his narcolepsy or sleep disorder. . Pitch Benson is an expert in mountaineering and helps them get into impossible places. Melissa Dukakis is a computer expert who comes in handy for eves. Logan Kellerman is an actor and is good at distracting people. Savannah Drysdale is an animal whisperer who helped them get past the guard dogs. S. Wendell Palomino or "Swindle" is a crooked businessman who has caused many problems for these friends. Luthor is a huge, temperamental Doberman who is......center of paper......if and no one in this book has superpowers. Plus, there's nothing about their situation that couldn't happen to a person in real life. I think the only thing that makes this story different from non-fiction is that it wouldn't be as funny if it were about real life events. It would be hard to think that there would be so many twists and turns in a real life story. My favorite part of this story was when Griffin hid Luthor in his duffle bag and the doberman chewed up all his clothes. When they arrived at the camp, the instructor thought he was poor and told him he would help him get some clothes to wear. The clothes she would have brought him were among the lost items. Every day Griffin had to wear a silly T-shirt with Care Bears or a photo of a bride and groom kissing and framed with pink and red flowers. He was embarrassed but wore them anyway.
